Cultural Performances and Rituals
Jogjakarta is an excellent place to see the traditional Javaneses performing art. The tourist information office can advice you of what’s on or check on tourist bulletins or website (www.gudeg.net, www.yogyes.com and www.dijogja.com, www.jogjatogo.com, www.taste of jogja).
Daily rehearsals of gamelan, dance, and wayang are performed at Sultan Palace. Performances also take place in hotels, restaurant and art centre. Various ritual arranged in relation with Sultan Palace’s activities and local traditional. The famous and spectacular dance performance is Ramayana Ballet held in the open theatre of Prambanan temple. It is performed in full episode and periodic episode in between May to October.
The closed theatre, trimurti also gives performance in Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Those all performance start from 7.30 p.m. 9.30 p.m. Purawisata Ramayana ballet shows an excellent short version with small number of dancer. Daily performance start from 8 p.m. 10 p.m. at Purawisata, jalan Brigjen Katamso. Macapatan (Javanese Chants) is performed in every Wednesday Wage of Javanese calendar, starting from 7 p.m. to 10
Leather Pupet Show in a short duration, every Sunday to Saturday, starting from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Museum Sono BudoyLo. The longer version are performance every Sunday on the second week of every month, starting from 9 p.m. to 04 a.m. at Sasana Hinggil Dwi Abad, Sultan Palace’s South Square.
A scheduled traditional performance also presented at Srimanganti Pavilion, the inside Sultan Palace everyday by 10 a.m. 12 a.m.
Classical Dance performance every Sunday by 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.
Clasical Wayang Orang on Sunday starting from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Karawitan on Monday & Tuesday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Grebeg or royal offering to people held by Sultan Palace three time a year, i.e. Grebeg Syawalan, Grebeg Besar, and Grebeg Maulud. Grebeg Maulud is the biggest event to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad held on 12 Syawal according to lunar calendar, closing the full month of Sekaten night fair.
In every celebration of the grebeg is always completed with a Gunungan (food offering in cone shape), symbolizing the sultan’s magnanimity to his people.

A great variety of outdoor attractions and activities are waiting to venture on. The rich volcanic soils sprout up forests at the north side and sandy coastlines bordered with limestone hills on the south end. They offer great and diverse natural charms as also open fields for challenging experiences and sports.
Water Attractions
Parangtritis has long been famous, not only as a beach resort where world class sand-dunes, black-sandy beach and rocky cliffs meet, but it is also a centre for the worship of Nyai Roro Kidul, the Queen of the South Seas. Her mystical union with the sultans of Yogyakarta and Surakarta requires regular offerings and attracts all sort of mystics. Geologically the beach is quite dangerous since the beach’s platform is formed by rigid reefs. The waves cause turbulent currents and bury everything beneath the sand. Please do not think about swimming here, many victims have fallen.
Samas. Take a bicycle or motorcycle to experience a pleasant trip through the countryside toward the beach. Situated some 26 km south of Jogja, only kilometers away west of Parangtritis.
Krakal. A white sandy beach with shallow shorelines. Close to it, four other interesting beaches also worth to visit, i.e. Baron, Drini, Kukup, Wediombo and Ngrenehan. The beaches are among the best coastlines along the south coast of Java.
Leafy Attractions
Kaliurang lies at the foot of Plawangan hill on the southern slope of mount Merapi, some 28 km, north of Jogja. This is a refreshing holiday resort, equipped with villas, a natural reserve parks, a camping ground, and pools, just a perfect place for those seeking refuge and tranquility amidst the lush green tropical splendor. Hike up the Plawangan hill to have a clear view of Mt. Merapi’s peak. About three kilometers eastward, after an hour stroll along shadowy tracks, you will find quiet village of Kinahrejo and Kali Adem camping ground, the easier base to climb Merapi.
Mt. Merapi is one of Java’s most dangerous volcanoes and has erupted numerous times. The last major eruption on 22 November 1994 killed 69 people. Since then, the 2,960 meters Merapi keeps to rumble and spew lava down its flank. Climbing and trekking are popular activity and it is possible to climb to a viewpoint to see the breathtaking flows of gleaming lava.
Gembira Loka Zoo is a spacious garden with numerous animal collections. Heavily packed during weekend and holidays, the zoo organized popular dangdut performances in the upper park.
Caving is a popular activity among student in Jogja. Several tour operators offer caving packages to visitors, including to the challenging earth-holes at the south limestone hills Pegunungan Seribu (Thousand Hills). Cereme Cave at Imogiri is a popular one, for it being easily waded through. More challenging caves are Luweng Jaran, Grubug and Jati, with more than a hundred meters deep vertical tunnels.
Operated since 1998, Yogya Go Kart at Jalan Wonosari km. 10 is the first and only karting circuit in Jogja and Central Java. It offers 460 meters national class racing track and experienced tutors. A kid fun parks is on the location.

Belum banyak yang tahu kalau batu batu alam nan cantik yang dipasang di berbagai taman maupun ruangan hotel berbintang maupun rumah mewah di beberapa kota besar di Indonesia dihasilkan dari sebuah dusun kecil bernama Lemahdadi, Bangunjiwo, Bantul, Yogyakarta.
Sugiman (37) pelopor desa setempat mengaku, sebelum merintis sebagai eksportir batu alam, dirinya memang sempat jatuh bangun dan belajar di Prumpung, Muntilan.
“Desa ini sebelumnya sangat tandus dan ekonomi masyarakat sangat minim, tapi berkat kerja keras saya, kini Lemahdadi mulai dikenal luas masyarakat,” ungkap pria yang hanya lulus SMP ini kemarin (24/9).
Produksi batu alam khas ’sugiman’ memang unik dan artistik, selain terbuat dari bahan pilihan, untuk kualitas eksport dirinya menerapkan standart mutu. Selain itu ketepatan dalam pengerjaan dan kualitas design menjadi pilihan para buyer yang selama ini pesan pada dirinya.
“Banyak buyer khususnya dari Australia yang pesan melalui teman di Bali dan kadang-kadang mereka datang langsung ke sini sekaligus melihat proses produksi,” tambah Sugiman.
Produk ’made in’Sugiman sangat berfariasi mulai dari hiasan dinding rumah, taman, dekorasi hotel termasuk patung budha yang banyak diminati buyer luar negeri. Soal harga pun, pria yang selalu berpenampilan low profile ini mengaku tidak terlalu mematok harga tinggi.
“Para buyer sepertinya sudah tahu kualitas garapan saya sehingga sampai saat ini soal harga tidak terlalu masalah, dari harga puluhan ribu hingga jutaan rupiah,” jelasnya mengakhiri pembicaraan.
Sayang, meski produknya sudah banyak dikenal di luar negeri, pihak pemda setempat belum banyak yang memberi perhatian khusus. Sugiman berharap, pemda bisa memberi akses jaringan informasi, pemasaran dan kredit lunak sehingga kelangsungan usahanya bisa bertahan. (nur)
Awal Puasa, Hunian Hotel Masih Lesu
Seperti tahun-tahun sebelumnya, tingkat hunian hotel bintang dan non bintang di Yogyakarta pada masa awal bulan ramadhan ini masih sepi. Sepinya pengunjung yang menginap di beberapa hotel bintang maupun non bintang memang sudah biasa. Selain banyak acara yang dikurangi, kebanyakan acara di hotel mulai ramai kalau sudah menjelang lebaran.
“Kalau seminggu menjelang lebaran dipastikan hunian hotel mulai ramai apalagi mereka yang pesan kamar memang menjalang lebaran,” ungkap Santy- karyawan hotel Borobudur di Yogya utara yang berhasil ditemui .
Hal sama juga ditemui di kawasan Sosrowijayan dan Prawirotaman . Di kedua tempat ini sebelum puasa masih luamayan ramai, tapi di minggu pertama bulan puasa tingkat hunian kamar masih sepi.
Anton- staf hotel Sala di kawasan Sosrowijayan mengungkapkan tamu mulai ramai menjalang lebaran, apalagi hotel non bintang memang banyak dipesan anggota keluarga khususnya mereka yang datang dari luar kota.
“Kalau awal puasa seperti ini termasuk sepi, kadang belum ada tamu setiap hari, tapi itu sudah biasa,” ungkap pria asal Bantul ini menambahkan.
Meski demikian, banyak pemilik hotel bintang dan non bintang yang kamarnya sudah dipesan tamu menjelang lebaran. Hotel Hyatt, misalnya permintaan tamu menjelang lebaran ini sudah mendekati 90%.
“biasa kami sering kehabisan kamar, overload kalau musim lebaran, sehingga tiap lebaran kamar hotel bintang ini penuh,” ungkap Erwin- dari bagian marketing.
Mereka berharap lebaran tahun ini lebih ramai dibanding tahun lalu sehingga pariwisata Yogya lebih ramai lagi. (nur)
